U.S. Envoy Seeks to Revive Relations with Burkina Faso

Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré, Foreign Minister of Burkina Faso, met with Nick Checker from the United States Department of State in Ouagadougou, as Washington seeks to revive cooperation with the Sahelian country.

The U.S. envoy said he carried a message from the administration of Donald Trump, proposing a renewed partnership based on “equals” and aimed at restoring dialogue after recent tensions.

Discussions focused on security cooperation, economic ties, and trade, with the United States also considering lifting the suspension on military equipment exports to Burkina Faso as part of efforts to strengthen collaboration in the fight against terrorism.

Traoré welcomed the new approach but stressed the importance of respecting Burkina Faso’s sovereignty and strategic choices, calling for the renewed commitment to translate into concrete actions.

Checker’s visit to Ouagadougou followed stops in Niger and Mali, as part of a regional tour aimed at engaging countries of the Confederation of Sahel States amid shifting alliances in the Sahel.
