President Diomaye Coalition to Hold Major Rally Amid Tensions with Prime Minister Sonko

A major political rally by the Diomaye President Coalition is scheduled for May 9 in Mbour, led by Bassirou Diomaye Faye.

Announced in Dakar, the event at the Caroline Faye Diouf Stadium is presented as both a show of loyalty to the president’s political base and a platform to outline his government’s next phase. Officials say the president will present concrete measures focused on reducing taxes on essential goods, supporting youth entrepreneurship, accelerating industrialization, expanding healthcare infrastructure, and reforming agriculture.

The gathering is also framed as a “citizen convention,” aimed at fostering direct dialogue with the population, with delegations expected from across the country.

The rally comes amid rising tensions between Faye and Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, both associated with PASTEF. Recent public criticism by the president of internal party practices, alongside Sonko’s creation of a separate coalition, APTE, has highlighted growing divisions within the executive.

These strains are also reflected in recent appointments at the presidency, signaling shifting political dynamics.

Against this backdrop, the Mbour meeting is expected to serve not only as a policy platform but also as a key moment for consolidating political support.
