President Mahama to Chair Special Cabinet Session on Ghana’s Constitutional Review Proposals

Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama is expected to chair a special Cabinet meeting today to determine the government’s position on recommendations emerging from the country’s constitutional review process.

Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu disclosed that a draft position paper has already been prepared following consultations involving the Attorney General and the president’s legal team.

According to him, the meeting will focus primarily on reviewing the document and deciding the government’s official stance on the various proposals presented by the constitutional review committee.

Felix Kwakye Ofosu explained that unlike a commission of inquiry, the constitutional review committee does not require the issuance of a white paper, meaning the government will instead publish a position paper outlining its decisions.

He added that some proposals may be accepted, amended or rejected depending on legal and practical considerations. The spokesperson also revealed that once Cabinet approves the position paper, the government will proceed with the establishment of an implementation committee to oversee the next phase of the reform process.

He stressed that the outcome of the special session would later be made public to allow Ghanaians to understand the government’s direction on constitutional reforms.
