Togo and Benin Governments Reaffirm Commitment to Stronger Cooperation and Regional Stability

The governments of Togo and Benin have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation, advancing regional integration, and enhancing security coordination following high-level talks in Lomé between Togolese leader Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé and Beninese President Romuald Wadagni.

The discussions took place during President Wadagni’s friendly working visit to Togo, part of a wider regional diplomatic tour that has already included Nigeria, Niger, and Burkina Faso, reflecting Benin’s renewed emphasis on strengthening relations with neighbouring West African states.

Both sides reviewed the state of their bilateral relations and expressed satisfaction with the longstanding ties of friendship, solidarity, and cooperation between the two countries.

They stressed the importance of maintaining continuous political dialogue as a foundation for peace, stability, and mutual trust.

Economic cooperation featured prominently in the exchanges, with the two governments agreeing on the need to deepen trade relations, improve transport and cross-border infrastructure, facilitate the movement of goods and services, and encourage greater private sector participation in both economies.

On regional issues, the two leaders reiterated their shared commitment to West African integration and the free movement of people across the sub-region.

They also expressed concern over ongoing security challenges, including terrorism and cross-border crime, and pledged to strengthen coordination between their respective security forces.

The visit concluded with both governments reaffirming their intention to maintain regular high-level consultations.

President Wadagni also extended an invitation to Faure Gnassingbé to visit Benin, which was accepted, with the date to be fixed through diplomatic channels.
