Ghana receives second group of evacuees from South Africa amid xenophobic attacks

Ghana’s government has welcomed a second group of citizens evacuated from South Africa following recent xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals.

The returnees arrived in Accra on Saturday and were received by Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa alongside Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, Gender Minister Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, and Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister James Gyakye Quayson.

The government assured the evacuees of its commitment to their welfare, with President John Dramani Mahama’s message of solidarity conveyed during the reception. Authorities also expressed appreciation to agencies and partners, including NADMO and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), for supporting the evacuation process.

Ghanaian officials said arrangements have been made to provide medical examinations, psychosocial support, and reintegration assistance for the returnees, while efforts are underway with private sector partners to facilitate employment opportunities.

The latest evacuation follows the return of about 300 Ghanaian nationals on May 27, with more than 800 citizens reportedly registering for voluntary repatriation through Ghana’s High Commission in Pretoria. The developments come as South Africa continues to grapple with rising tensions linked to xenophobic violence and concerns over irregular migration.
