Benin Government Condemns Attack Near Niamey Airport

The Beninese government has condemned Thursday’s attack near Diori-Hamani International Airport in Niamey, expressing solidarity with the people and authorities of Niger.

In a statement, Cotonou said it received news of the incident “with deep emotion” and denounced the attack on a strategic civilian infrastructure, stressing that such acts threaten public safety and regional stability.

Benin reaffirmed its support for Nigerien President Abdourahamane Tiani and the Nigerien people, while highlighting the longstanding ties between the two countries.

The attack comes amid a gradual normalization of relations between Benin and Niger following months of diplomatic tensions. Both governments recently announced progress in talks aimed at reopening their shared border and strengthening cooperation against terrorism and cross-border crime.

Niger continues to face persistent security threats from armed groups linked to the Islamic State in the Sahel and the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims operating across the Sahel region.
