The Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) say they repelled an attack on their military base in San, in the Ségou region, early Sunday morning, maintaining that the facility remains under government control. According to the army, the assault began around 5:30 a.m. and was met with a strong response from troops.
Africa Corps, the Russian contingent operating alongside Malian forces, said fighters from the JNIM and FLA coalition were responsible and claimed that more than 40 attackers were killed during the fighting.
The commander of the 23rd FAMa Regiment, Lieutenant Colonel El Oumrani, said the attack had been successfully repelled and that clearance operations were continuing around the area.
The account, however, is disputed. A media channel affiliated with JNIM claimed that its fighters had taken full control of the military barracks in San and released videos purporting to show their presence around the base.
Africa Corps rejected the claim, saying the attackers filmed around the compound before withdrawing from the area after their assault was repelled. No independent verification of either side’s claims was immediately available.
The incident comes amid renewed attacks on Malian military positions, with several army bases coming under assault in different parts of the country in recent months.
