The Ghanaian government says it has fully financed the evacuation of its citizens from South Africa following recent xenophobic attacks, rejecting reports that Ghana would reimburse Pretoria for repatriation costs. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Ghana did not request any financial or material assistance from South Africa, stressing that the evacuation was funded by the Ghanaian government and Ghanaian partners.
Since May 2026, more than 1,600 Ghanaians have been evacuated from South Africa, with operations still ongoing. Returnees are receiving reintegration support, including financial assistance and transportation costs, while the government says it remains committed to protecting Ghanaians abroad and responding swiftly whenever their safety is threatened.
