Guinean President General Mamadi Doumbouya has ordered the dismissal of 173 members of the country’s armed forces for desertion, according to a decree broadcast on national television on Monday, August 24.
The decision was announced during an evening news programme on Guinea’s Radio and Television (RTG) by General Amara Camara, Minister Secretary-General of the Presidency.
The decree cites Articles 24 and 25 of Guinea’s General Statute for Military Personnel, which provide for disciplinary action in cases of desertion.
The list of dismissed personnel includes soldiers serving in several branches and units of the Guinean military, including the Autonomous Airborne Troops Battalion (BATA), infantry battalions and territorial companies, as well as other defence and security structures.
Dismissal for desertion removes the affected personnel from active military service. The measure comes as Guinea’s military authorities continue to stress discipline, respect for the chain of command and compliance with military regulations
