Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama held a series of bilateral meetings on Tuesday on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly, focusing on trade, technology, economic cooperation and Africa’s role in global affairs.
Mahama met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Kenyan President William Ruto and Jordan’s King Abdullah II, among other leaders. His discussions with Ruto covered expanding trade between Ghana and Kenya, regional security, diplomatic cooperation and efforts to strengthen Africa’s collective voice internationally. Ruto also welcomed Mahama’s Accra Reset initiative, which promotes greater financial self-reliance for African countries.
Talks with King Abdullah centred on expanding economic ties and identifying new opportunities for trade and bilateral cooperation. Mahama also held discussions with Swiss President Guy Parmelin, outlining his government’s efforts to revive Ghana’s economy and address inherited economic pressures.
During the meeting with Parmelin, Mahama called for Swiss support for Ghana’s decentralisation agenda and highlighted artificial intelligence as an area where cooperation could help improve domestic revenue mobilisation. The discussions formed part of Ghana’s broader efforts to attract international partnerships in technology and economic development.
Mahama also met Rebeca Grynspan, Costa Rica’s candidate for UN Secretary-General, as well as Queen Máxima of the Netherlands, who serves as the UN Secretary-General’s Special Advocate for Inclusive Finance for Development, to discuss issues linked to international cooperation and financial inclusion.
