Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has called for stronger international cooperation and reforms to global institutions, warning that a growing crisis of confidence is weakening the international order.
Addressing the UN General Assembly in New York, Faye defended multilateralism based on international law and called for renewed efforts to promote peace, including in Gaza and the Sahel.
He also urged reforms to the international financial system, arguing that African countries need greater support to reduce the burden of debt and finance development.
Faye called for progress on reforming the UN Security Council, saying its current structure does not adequately reflect today’s global realities. As chair of ECOWAS, he also highlighted regional efforts to promote peace and combat terrorism in West Africa.
Senegal is seeking a seat on the Security Council for 2032-2033 and is building a new UN complex in Diamniadio with domestic funding, according to the presidency.
Faye ended his address with a call for diplomacy over confrontation, saying: “Bridges rather than walls, dialogue rather than confrontation, law rather than force.”
