Ghanaian authorities have arrested seven women accused of using cedi banknotes to make decorative money bouquets and adorn cakes for celebrations.
The Bank of Ghana says such practices violate rules governing the handling of the country’s currency and could undermine the integrity and proper use of the cedi.
The arrests followed a tip-off and police operation in Accra targeting people allegedly involved in selling the currency-based decorations. They represent the authorities’ strongest enforcement action since the central bank issued a warning in July.
Money bouquets and currency-decorated cakes are commonly used as gifts at weddings, birthdays and graduations. The central bank has warned against activities that could damage or diminish the value of banknotes.
Police are investigating the case, with the suspects expected to face prosecution. If convicted, they could receive a fine or prison sentence, depending on the court’s ruling.
