Guinea-Bissau Confirms Election Delay Amid Political Uncertainty

Guinea-Bissau will postpone its presidential and legislative elections scheduled for December 6, Prime Minister Ilídio Vieira Té announced on Thursday, without providing a new date.

The prime minister cited delays in political parties’ internal congresses and missed deadlines for candidates to submit their applications to the Supreme Court as obstacles to holding the vote as planned.

The postponement follows political turmoil triggered by a military coup in November 2025, when soldiers seized power before the results of that month’s presidential election were announced.

Political tensions have continued under the transitional authorities. Last week, the government blocked former president Umaro Sissoco Embaló from returning to the country, citing national security concerns. Embaló had planned to return and contest the upcoming presidential election.

The country also approved a new constitution in August that expanded presidential powers, adding to concerns about the direction of its political transition.

No new election date has been announced, leaving uncertainty over the timetable for Guinea-Bissau’s return to constitutional rule.
