Mali Court Sentences Former Bamako Mayor to 10 Years in Prison

A court in Mali has sentenced former Bamako District mayor Adama Sangaré to 10 years in prison for the illegal subdivision and regularisation of public land near Bamako-Sénou International Airport.

The Criminal Division of the National Economic and Financial Judicial Centre handed down the sentence on Monday, October 26, 2026. Two former sub-prefects, Daha Keïta and Ibrahim Koïta, also received 10-year prison terms.

Three other defendants – Adam Aïché Traoré, Fatouma Samassékou and Bourama Komagara – were sentenced to 10 years each, with five years suspended. Souleymane Dagnon, a former mayor of Bamako’s Commune VI who was tried in absentia, received a 20-year prison sentence, with an arrest warrant issued against him. Sékou Keïta was acquitted.

The court also ordered the convicted defendants to jointly pay 483.964 million CFA francs in demolition costs and 50 million CFA francs in damages to the Malian state.

The case concerned land-regularisation decisions issued between 2016 and 2018 involving property designated as part of the state’s public domain under a September 1999 executive decree.

The defendants faced charges including forgery, unlawful encroachment on public property and complicity. Proceedings began on October 12 after two administrative postponements.
