30 Nigerian State Assemblies Back State Police Plan

About 30 state Houses of Assembly in Nigeria have endorsed a proposed constitutional amendment to establish state police, Senate President Godswill Akpabio has said.

Akpabio disclosed this on Wednesday while meeting members of the Arewa Revival Project, a northern youth organisation representing the region’s 19 states, in the nation’s capital, Abuja.

He said decentralised policing would strengthen national security by bringing law enforcement closer to local communities. He expressed confidence that the constitutional amendment process was nearing completion but did not give a specific timeline.

Akpabio also urged the youth group to campaign for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027, arguing that the administration needed more time to implement its economic reforms and security policies.

He said Tinubu had taken steps to diversify Nigeria’s economy beyond crude oil, reform the tax system and address longstanding structural challenges. The Senate president  also called on young people to challenge what he described as paid social media propaganda against the government.
