Burkina Faso Says 74% of National Territory Recaptured Amid Intensified Military Campaign

The Burkinabe government says it has regained control of 74 percent of the country’s national territory by 2025, reflecting a significant acceleration in military operations against jihadist groups.

The announcement was made by Prime Minister Jean Emmanuel Ouedraogo during a presentation on the state of the nation at the National Legislative Assembly.

The figure marks an increase of more than three percentage points from the 72.7 percent recorded in August 2025 and continues an upward trend from previous years, rising from 69 percent in 2023 to over 70 percent by the end of 2024.

According to the government, the territorial reconquest has led to tangible outcomes, including the liberation of 442 villages, the reopening of 73 prefectures and town halls, and the restoration of more than 600 schools and 38 health facilities.

Authorities also point to key military gains such as the recovery of the Sourou Valley, stabilization efforts in Diapaga and Djibo, the resumption of operations at the Boungou mine, and the gradual return of state administration to formerly inaccessible areas.

To sustain the campaign, troop strength has been expanded through the recruitment of thousands of soldiers, police officers, and Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland, while the Patriotic Support Fund has mobilized 222 billion CFA francs.

The government views the progress as a major step toward reversing the security crisis that has gripped the country since 2015.
