Ghana Implements Asantehene Mediation as Army Evacuates Major Figure from Bawku

The Ghana Armed Forces have evacuated Alhaji Seidu Abagre from Bawku in the Upper East Region as part of the government’s implementation of recommendations from the mediation report led by Otumfuo Asantehene Osei Tutu II on the protracted Bawku conflict.

The operation, carried out on Tuesday afternoon, was conducted without incident, with the Interior Ministry confirming that Alhaji Seidu Abagre is safe and currently under the protection of security agencies.

Authorities say the move aligns strictly with the roadmap proposed by the Asantehene, who was tasked with mediating the long-standing chieftaincy dispute in the area.

Bawku, located near Ghana’s borders with Burkina Faso and Togo, has for decades been affected by recurrent violence linked to chieftaincy tensions between the Mamprusi and Kusasi communities, disrupting lives and economic activity in the strategic town.

The evacuation underscores the fragile security situation and signals the government’s resolve to follow through on traditional mediation efforts aimed at restoring calm.

Regional Cultural experts suggest that ,the process highlights the central role of respected traditional authorities such as Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, whose moral influence in Ghana and across the region continues to make him a key figure in resolving complex communal conflicts.
