ECOWAS has called for maximum restraint and a resumption of dialogue following the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in US-Israeli strikes, warning that the escalation risks serious international consequences.
The Regional bloc urged all parties to prioritize peaceful dispute resolution in line with the UN Charter and international law. Iranian authorities reported Khamenei “fallen as a martyr” after February 28 strikes on multiple cities, including Tehran, causing dozens of deaths and injuries.
Reports indicate attacks on civilians, including at a girls’ school, with some estimates exceeding 200 victims.
In retaliation, Iran launched missiles and drones toward Israel, raising fears of a wider regional conflict. Unconfirmed reports also suggest the deaths of senior Iranian figures, including Ali Shamkhani and General Mohammad Pakpour.
ECOWAS emphasized the potential impact on international peace, security, and critical global markets, especially affecting Africa.
The organization stressed protecting civilians and infrastructure while urging strengthened diplomatic efforts.
International reactions vary: Senegal and Nigeria called for ceasefire and de-escalation, the African Union warned of economic risks, South Africa urged dialogue, Russia condemned the attacks, Morocco criticized Iranian strikes on Gulf states, and the EU highlighted civilian protection and humanitarian law compliance.
