The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has ended the services of his long-time lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, according to reports from Abuja. In a letter dated July 22, 2026, Kanu reportedly confirmed that he had already informed Ejiofor verbally that his legal representation was no longer required, with the letter serving as formal confirmation of the termination.
The decision also ends Ejiofor’s role as legal representative for Kanu’s family and IPOB, the separatist movement seeking an independent Biafran state in southeastern Nigeria.
The move comes as Kanu remains in detention after being convicted by a Nigerian federal court on charges including terrorism, treason, and leading a banned organization. Under IPOB’s internal rules, Kanu retains the authority to appoint or dismiss key officials and representatives of the movement.
With the termination taking immediate effect, reports indicate that Ejiofor is no longer authorized to speak publicly, grant interviews, or issue statements on behalf of Kanu, his family, or IPOB. The lawyer had not publicly commented on the decision at the time of reporting.
