Senegal President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has reaffirmed his commitment to the political parties that supported his 2024 presidential victory during the general assembly for the restructuring of the Diomaye President coalition held in Dakar.
Addressing coalition members, the head of state recalled the circumstances surrounding his candidacy, which was formed while he was in detention after his party African Patriots of Senegal for Work, Ethics and Fraternity had been dissolved by the previous administration.
Elected in March 2024 with 54.28 percent of the vote in the first round against the ruling coalition candidate, he emphasized that the governing alliance was built through the support of allied parties and political leaders and pledged to remain loyal to the coalition that helped bring him to power.
The meeting also highlighted the coalition’s growing political base, with former prime minister Aminata Touré announcing that 278 mayors have joined the platform, while Higher Education Minister Abdourahmane Diouf stressed that the parliamentary majority backs the president’s agenda.
The assembly took place amid ongoing speculation about relations between President Faye and Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, which intensified after political remarks by Sonko in 2025.
The president dismissed suggestions of a rift, stating that their focus remains addressing the country’s challenges.
The coalition also adopted internal rules promoting discipline and dialogue among members while outlining objectives including support for the presidential mandate, preparation for future elections and strengthening the platform’s long-term political presence.
