Chad Army on High Alert After Deadly Drone Strike Near Sudan Border

The army of Chad has been placed on high alert following a drone attack that killed at least 15 civilians in the border town of Tiné, near Sudan.

Chadian authorities said the strike occurred Wednesday evening and targeted civilians gathered at a burial site. While officials believe the drone may have originated from Sudan—where conflict has been ongoing since 2023—they said investigations are still underway to confirm its source.

President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno convened an emergency security meeting and ordered the military to maximum alert, instructing the government to prepare a response in case of further incursions.

A delegation will also be sent to assess the damage.

The attack comes amid rising tensions between the two countries, with Chad having already closed its border with Sudan in late February due to repeated incursions.

The Rapid Support Forces denied responsibility, instead blaming the Sudanese army led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, which has yet to respond.
