Algeria–Niger Sign 20 Agreements Amid Doubts Over Implementation

Algeria and Niger have signed 20 agreements and memoranda of understanding across key sectors including energy, health, infrastructure, and the digital economy, following a bilateral commission co-chaired in Niamey by Algerian Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb and his Nigerien counterpart.

The initiative aligns with directives from Presidents Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Abdourahamane Tiani and includes flagship projects such as a 40 MW power plant in Gorou Banda, developed through cooperation between Sonelgaz and Nigelec.

Despite the broad scope of the agreements, questions persist over their actual implementation.

Observers point to a pattern of ambitious regional projects—such as the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline and the Trans-Saharan Highway—facing delays due to funding constraints, logistical challenges, and insecurity in the Sahel.

The absence of clear timelines and prioritization, combined with institutional limitations, continues to widen the gap between political commitments and tangible outcomes, raising doubts about the real impact of this renewed cooperation drive.
