Robert Dussey has called for a shift beyond purely military responses in tackling terrorism in the subregion and the Sahel, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive strategy.
In a message relayed by Mali’s Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Diop, he stressed that lasting peace requires stronger socio-economic integration, institutional stability, and social inclusion to address the root causes of insecurity.
The position aligns with ongoing regional diplomatic efforts involving actors such as the African Union and Economic Community of West African States, as the Sahel remains the global epicenter of terrorism despite recent declines in violence in countries like Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.
Dussey also reiterated that regional security must remain “indivisible,” warning that instability within the Confederation of Sahel States could have wider repercussions across West Africa.
