Nigeria Faces Tough US Travel Warning Amid Rising Insecurity

Nigeria has been hit with a stricter travel advisory from the United States Department of State, urging citizens to reconsider travel due to terrorism, kidnapping, and civil unrest.

Several states—including Plateau, Borno, Yobe, and Niger—have been classified at the highest risk level, with Washington warning that attacks could occur without warning in public places and that kidnappings for ransom remain widespread.

The move comes despite ongoing security cooperation between the United States and Nigeria, including intelligence sharing and military support.

Authorities also approved the departure of non-essential staff from the U.S. embassy in Abuja, highlighting concerns over a deteriorating security situation.

Regional security expert say the advisory underscores growing instability fueled by insurgent groups and criminal networks, raising concerns about its potential impact on investment and international confidence.
