Burkina Faso hosted African Union Chairman Évariste Ndayishimiye on Monday, where he called for building a “common future” between the African Union and the Confederation of Sahel States (AES).
Speaking after talks with Burkinabe leader Ibrahim Traoré in Ouagadougou, Ndayishimiye praised the country’s commitment to combating terrorism and commended the support of its population.
He noted that he observed a stable situation during his visit and highlighted the importance of strengthening ties between continental institutions and Sahelian states.
Discussions focused on the security challenges facing the Sahel and prospects for closer cooperation between the African Union and AES member countries.
Ndayishimiye said he would present a report to the AU based on his visit, expressing hope it would help foster lasting rapprochement.
He emphasized the AU’s role as a bridge between African peoples and institutions, at a time when relations with the Sahel bloc are evolving amid ongoing security threats and shifting regional alliances.
