Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye paid a 24-hour working and solidarity visit to Mali on Tuesday, where he held talks with Transitional President Assimi Goïta on strengthening bilateral cooperation, regional security and economic ties.
During the visit, President Faye conveyed Senegal’s condolences following recent attacks in Mali, condemned terrorism in the strongest terms and stressed that insecurity remains a shared regional challenge requiring greater cooperation.
The two leaders also discussed improving trade and transport, particularly along the strategic Dakar-Bamako corridor, a vital route for Mali’s imports and exports.
The visit, President Faye’s second to Mali since taking office, underscored the strong historical, cultural and economic ties between the two neighbours despite evolving regional dynamics.
Although the trip came shortly after Faye assumed the rotating chairmanship of ECOWAS, it remained strictly bilateral and did not involve formal discussions between ECOWAS and the Confederation of Sahel States (AES).
Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining close political dialogue, enhancing security cooperation against terrorism and preserving economic relations that are critical to the people of both countries.
