GHANA launches nationwide modern market program to boost local economies

Ghana is rolling out an ambitious program to construct modern, multipurpose markets across all its districts, aimed at transforming local economies and strengthening agricultural value chains.

President John Dramani Mahama announced the initiative during the groundbreaking ceremony of a 24-hour model market in Bimbilla, describing it as a key campaign promise under the #ResettingGhana agenda.

The project will see each of the country’s 261 districts equipped with upgraded market infrastructure designed to support continuous commercial activity, moving beyond the traditional periodic market system.

The new markets will integrate banking services, storage facilities, enhanced security and fire prevention systems, alongside social amenities such as restaurants, nurseries, and clinics.

Authorities say the model is designed to better serve traders and ensure resilience during emergencies.

The president also highlighted the critical role of markets in linking producers to consumers, stressing that agricultural productivity must be matched with efficient distribution systems.

Supporting this effort, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research will introduce preservation and value-addition mechanisms to reduce post-harvest losses. Meanwhile,

Local Government Minister Ahmed Ibrahim warned contractors against substandard work, while the president, alongside Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu, also inspected ongoing infrastructure projects in the area, including a new student residence facility.
