The government of Ghana has summoned South Africa’s acting high commissioner to Accra in response to xenophobic incidents targeting its nationals, demanding urgent action to ensure their safety.
In a statement, Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa expressed “deep concern” over acts of intimidation and harassment circulating in viral videos.
He cited a specific case in KwaZulu-Natal where a Ghanaian resident with legal status was reportedly confronted and ordered to justify his presence before being asked to leave the country.
Authorities in Accra say tensions are escalating, with some foreign nationals reportedly staying indoors for safety, although no casualties have been recorded.
Ghana has lodged a formal protest, urging South Africa to take immediate measures to protect foreign nationals and prevent a recurrence.
The minister also recalled Ghana’s historic support during the anti-apartheid struggle, emphasizing the need for African solidarity.
South African officials have pledged to monitor the situation closely, restore calm, and ensure those responsible for the incidents are held accountable.
