African Union condemns coordinated attacks as Mali faces renewed security tensions

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has strongly condemned the recent coordinated attacks in Mali, warning that such offensives risk endangering civilians and further destabilizing the country.

He reaffirmed the African Union’s “constant and unwavering” commitment to peace, security and good governance, while stressing the urgency of protecting civilian populations and preventing further escalation.

The AU also expressed full solidarity with Malian authorities, the population, and defense and security forces engaged in ongoing operations.

The condemnation follows simultaneous attacks reported across key locations including Bamako, Gao, Sévaré, Kidal and Kati, where armed groups targeted military and civilian sites.

According to the Malian army, the assaults were repelled with significant losses inflicted on the attackers, although security operations are still ongoing.

Tensions remain high, particularly around Bamako and Kati, with reports of explosions and heavy gunfire, while the United States Embassy in Mali has urged its citizens to stay indoors. In the north, the Front for the Liberation of Azawad claimed control of parts of Kidal, though this remains unverified, as the overall situation continues to evolve.
