Mali imposes curfew in Bamako after coordinated attacks

Authorities in Mali have imposed a 72-hour curfew in Bamako following the coordinated attacks of April 25, which targeted the capital, Kati and several interior towns. The measure, in force from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. and renewable if necessary, was announced by the district governor for public order reasons. It comes amid a broader deterioration of the security situation, with curfews already in place in regions such as Kayes, Ségou and Dioïla.

In the Gao region, authorities have tightened existing restrictions, moving the curfew to 7:30 p.m. until further notice amid ongoing tensions and reported clashes. The attacks targeted strategic locations including areas near the Bamako airport, as well as Kidal, Sévaré and Mopti, with explosions and gunfire reported across multiple sites. Armed groups including Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin and the Front for the Liberation of Azawad claimed responsibility, while Malian authorities say the attacks were repelled and security operations are ongoing. The curfew marks a rare measure in Bamako, last seen during the COVID-19 crisis in 2020, highlighting the seriousness of the current security situation.
