Russia Reaffirms Counterterrorism Commitment In Mali Amid Rising Tensions

Russia has reiterated its determination to continue supporting counterterrorism efforts in Mali, as security challenges intensify and debate grows over foreign military involvement.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that Moscow will persist in combating extremism and terrorism in Mali, emphasizing that its presence follows a request from the country’s transitional authorities.

The statement comes amid renewed pressure from the Azawad Liberation Front, whose spokesperson Mohamed Elmaouloud Ramadane recently urged Russia to reconsider its partnership with Bamako.

While acknowledging Moscow’s stance, the group said it holds no direct hostility toward Russia but questions its cooperation with Malian authorities, particularly following coordinated attacks claimed alongside Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin in northern regions such as Kidal.

On the ground, Malian authorities report that the situation is stabilizing after recent offensives, with ongoing military operations targeting armed groups.

In a symbolic move, Assimi Goïta posthumously promoted late Defence Minister Sadio Camara to the rank of General of the Army after he was killed in a car bomb attack.

Despite tensions, Bamako and Moscow have reaffirmed their strategic partnership, with Goïta recently receiving a Russian delegation, signaling continued military and diplomatic cooperation.
