Senegal’s government intensifies ECOWAS consultations ahead of leadership transition

The Senegalese government has stepped up diplomatic consultations within ECOWAS as the tenure of Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio as the bloc’s rotating chairman approaches its end.

Over the weekend, President Julius Maada Bio received a Senegalese delegation led by Foreign Affairs Minister Cheikh Niang, carrying a message from President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.

The delegation also included General Birame Diop, whom Dakar has nominated to lead the ECOWAS Commission. Following the meeting, Maada Bio reaffirmed the strong ties between Sierra Leone and Senegal and reiterated his commitment to strengthening cooperation between the two countries.

The visit comes amid growing expectations that Senegal could assume the rotating presidency of ECOWAS at the organization’s next summit.

Senegal has already secured the presidency of the ECOWAS Commission for the 2026–2030 term after a decision taken at the Abuja summit in December 2025.

If President Bassirou Diomaye Faye also takes over the rotating chairmanship of the regional bloc, Dakar would hold both the political and executive leadership of ECOWAS.

Such a development would significantly strengthen Senegal’s influence as the organization navigates regional security challenges, relations with the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), and ongoing discussions on the future of West African integration.
