Burkina Faso Hosts More Than 45,000 Refugees, Focuses on Integration Efforts

Burkina Faso is currently hosting more than 45,000 refugees, according to the National Commission for Refugees (CONAREF), which says the figure reflects the country’s commitment to solidarity and protection for displaced populations.

Speaking ahead of World Refugee Day 2026, CONAREF and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) outlined activities planned to mark the occasion and the 75th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention.

CONAREF Permanent Secretary Vlé Fulbert Traoré said the presence of thousands of refugees demonstrates the generosity and hospitality of the Burkinabe people.

National celebrations will take place from June 18 to 20 in Ouahigouya under the theme of social cohesion and strengthening relations between refugees and host communities.

Authorities and partners say this year’s focus will go beyond humanitarian assistance to promote the economic empowerment of refugees, with greater involvement from the private sector to create employment and integration opportunities.

The programme includes sporting activities, field visits and community initiatives, culminating in World Refugee Day celebrations on June 20.
