Mali Army Claims to Regain Initiative After New Wave of Attacks, Fighting Continues in Anéfis

The Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) say they have regained control of areas targeted by coordinated attacks on July 4, 2026, after launching air and ground operations against armed groups in several parts of the country.

In a statement issued on July 6, the army said it had restored the situation in locations including Aguel-Hoc, Gao, Sévaré

Kéniéroba, Konna and the Somadougou-Soufroulaye area, with support from its partners, including Africa Corps. However, the military acknowledged that clashes resumed in Anéfis on July 5 following the arrival of reinforcements by armed groups.

The army reported losses among attackers, including 20 neutralized in Sévaré and six in Gao, while also confirming one military death and four wounded in Gao.

The Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) claimed responsibility for the offensive in Anéfis, a strategic town linking Gao, Kidal and Aguel-Hoc, while the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM) also claimed attacks against several military and pro-government positions.

The latest clashes come just over two months after the April 25 coordinated attacks that targeted Bamako, Kati, Gao, Mopti and Kidal, resulting in heavy fighting and the loss of key positions in the north.

The renewed violence highlights continued pressure on Malian forces across multiple fronts, from northern strongholds to central regions, as the army and armed groups continue competing for territorial and strategic control.
