Macky Sall Steps Up Diplomatic Campaign for UN Secretary-General Position

Former Senegalese President Macky Sall has intensified his campaign to become the next United Nations Secretary-General, holding a series of high-level meetings with diplomats and political leaders from influential countries involved in the selection process.

In New York on July 6, he met with Fu Cong, Michael Waltz, and Jérôme Bonnafont to discuss his candidacy, multilateralism and reform of the United Nations.

Days earlier, he traveled to Beijing for talks with Wang Yi before meeting Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Giorgos Gerapetritis in Athens on issues including global governance, development cooperation and international security.

The race to succeed António Guterres, whose second term ends on December 31, 2026, has entered a decisive stage. After public hearings, the United Nations Security Council will hold informal consultations before recommending a single candidate to the United Nations General Assembly.

Besides Macky Sall, the declared candidates include Michelle Bachelet, Rafael Grossi, Rebeca Grynspan, María Fernanda Espinosa and Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett.

The successful candidate must secure the backing of the Security Council without a veto from any of its five permanent members before being approved by the 193-member General Assembly.
