Senegalese President Faye Sets August 8 for Launch of New Political Party

Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has announced that the founding congress of a new political party bringing together his supporters will be held on August 8 at the Dakar Arena.

The decision follows consultations with local elected officials, including more than 300 mayors from across the country, as part of efforts to create a unified political platform.

President Faye has tasked Aminata Touré with leading a committee to prepare the party’s formation, while coalition members say the initiative aims to strengthen territorial equity and consolidate support for the president’s agenda.

The new party will establish its leadership and political orientation amid growing political realignment in Senegal, following the evolving relationship between President Faye and National Assembly Speaker Ousmane Sonko.

The move comes after the Constitutional Council, acting on a referral by President Faye, struck down a constitutional reform adopted by parliament on June 29 that sought to restructure key state institutions and bar a sitting president from leading a political party.
