Ghana Opposition Demands Flight Invoices Over $2.3m Evacuation Cost

Ghana’s opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has demanded the release of original invoices for three charter flights reportedly costing GH¢27 million ($2.3 million) to evacuate Ghanaian nationals from South Africa following xenophobic attacks.

The party alleges that the cost may have been inflated and wants the invoices from Ethiopian Airlines made public to clarify the expenditure.

Dennis Miracles Aboagye, the NPP’s Director of Communications, made the demand at a press conference in Accra on Sunday, October 18, calling for greater accountability in the use of public funds.

The demand follows allegations by opposition lawmakers that more than GH¢16 million remains unaccounted for in connection with the evacuation exercise.

Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Ministry has published the names and signatures of evacuees, along with records of payments for reintegration and transport allowances. However, the NPP says the documents do not address its concerns about the charter flight costs.

The government has yet to respond to the specific demand for the original invoices. The allegations of inflated costs and missing funds have not been independently established.
