African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has reaffirmed the continental body’s support for the African Union Mission for Mali and the Sahel, MISAHEL, during a visit to its headquarters in Bamako.
Received by the mission’s High Representative Mamadou Tangara on Monday, Youssouf praised MISAHEL’s efforts in promoting peace, stability, dialogue and sustainable development in Mali and the wider Sahel region.
Established in 2013, MISAHEL serves as the African Union’s political and technical presence in Mali, focusing on governance, security, development, crisis monitoring and institutional coordination rather than military operations.
The visit comes as the AU seeks to strengthen engagement with Sahel countries, with Mamadou Tangara tasked with intensifying dialogue, supporting regional mediation efforts and improving cooperation on security, counterterrorism and humanitarian challenges.
