The Sierra Leonean government has formally ended criminal proceedings against former President Ernest Bai Koroma, clearing the way for his return home after medical treatment abroad.
In a notice issued on July 14, the Office of the Attorney General and Minister of Justice confirmed that it had filed a document terminating the case under the Criminal Procedure Act, 2024, bringing all legal proceedings and Koroma’s bail conditions to an immediate end.
Koroma, who served as president from 2007 to 2018, had faced charges of high treason and failure to report an alleged coup attempt against President Julius Maada Bio in November 2023.
He was granted permission to travel abroad for medical treatment in January 2024 while under judicial supervision.
The government said the former president is now free to return to Sierra Leone at any time, although it did not disclose the reasons for withdrawing the charges.
