AU Urges Strong International Action as Security Crisis Deepens in Mali

The African Union has issued an urgent appeal for a coordinated global response to the worsening security situation in Mali, where escalating militant attacks are disrupting essential supplies and heightening the humanitarian crisis.

In a statement released Sunday, AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf voiced “deep concern” over the surge in violence attributed to armed extremist groups.

The attacks, targeting fuel convoys and key transport routes, have severely affected access to basic goods and intensified pressures on civilians already facing difficult conditions.

Mali has been grappling with acute fuel shortages for weeks after militants linked to the al-Qaeda affiliated JNIM began striking tanker trucks transporting fuel from neighboring countries.

Authorities in Bamako have implemented emergency measures, but the crunch continues to worsen. Fuel price adjustments, suspended amid the crisis, are expected to resume on November 10.

The AU Commission reaffirmed its readiness to support Mali and other Sahel countries in restoring security and stability, emphasizing that coordinated action is essential to counter the region’s escalating threats.
