Benin Government Issues Rabies Alert After Child’s Death

The government of Benin has raised a nationwide alert following a resurgence of canine rabies, urging the public to avoid contact with stray animals or those showing abnormal behavior.

The outbreak, which began in early 2025, has already claimed the life of an eight-year-old child in April.

In a joint statement, the Ministers of Agriculture and Health announced strict new measures to curb the spread of the fatal yet preventable disease, including the systematic slaughter of any pet found wandering without its owner.

Authorities stressed that the persistence of rabies is largely due to unvaccinated animals, particularly stray dogs. Since 2021, the government has run low-cost vaccination campaigns targeting dogs, cats, and monkeys.

Residents are advised to keep their pets vaccinated, avoid any animal displaying signs like aggression, excessive drooling, or paralysis, and report such cases to veterinary or local authorities. In the event of a bite or scratch, even minor, immediate medical attention is strongly advised.

Health centers across the country are prepared to deliver prompt and effective care, which can prevent the virus from developing in exposed individuals.
