The Beninese National Army has launched a large-scale military exercise, dubbed Operation Shield, across the departments of Zou, Mono, and Couffo to strengthen the country’s counterterrorism preparedness and response capacity.
Led by Colonel Faïzou Gomina and mobilizing over 560 personnel, the exercise began on June 30, 2025, and includes simulations of emergency responses to terrorist attacks, such as neutralizing armed threats and securing public areas.
It also integrates previous drills held in Pira, Bassila, Djakotomey, Lalo, and Ouesse.
The operation features various capacity-building activities at strategic sites, including water rescue training at the Ladji River Brigade in Cotonou, climbing exercises in Dassa, and tactical drills at the Ouassa military camp.
It is supported by aerial surveillance from the Air Force, intelligence from the Republican Police, and assessments by experts from the Army and Navy.
Operation Shield will conclude on July 3 and 4 with medical outreach and a VIP engagement, aligning with the broader strategy of Major General Fructueux Gbaguidi to enhance national security readiness.
