The Benin government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening relations with Mali following a working visit by President Romuald Wadagni to Bamako, where he held talks with Malian leader Assimi Goïta. The visit forms part of President Wadagni’s regional diplomatic tour aimed at deepening cooperation, promoting regional dialogue and enhancing economic and security partnerships across West Africa. Upon his arrival in Bamako, the Beninese leader was welcomed with official honours before proceeding to the Koulouba Palace for discussions with his host.
The talks focused on strengthening cooperation in areas including security, trade and regional integration at a time when West Africa is undergoing significant political and diplomatic changes. Benin, a member of ECOWAS, has sought to maintain dialogue with Mali and other members of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) despite recent regional tensions. Both countries are expected to explore greater collaboration on transport corridors, economic exchanges and efforts to address common security threats, including terrorism and cross-border crime. The visit is also seen as a step toward revitalising relations between Bamako and Cotonou and reinforcing cooperation based on mutual respect, sovereignty and shared regional interests.
