Benin’s President Bids Emotional Farewell on Independence Day Amid Calls for Unity and Security

President Patrice Talon delivered a heartfelt address marking what he confirmed would be his final Independence Day in office.

His speech, delivered on the Occasion of the nation’s 65th Independence was filled with messages of pride, unity, and determination for a more secure and prosperous future.

Talon, reflecting on his administration’s achievements noted that one of his earliest promises was to make his people proud to be Beninese.

According to him, the country already hold the potential to rise above underdevelopment, provided they embrace collective sacrifice and joint effort.

He expressed deep gratitude to the people, noting the pride visible on the faces of citizens who had gathered to celebrate.

Speaking at the event, Colonel James Johnson, spokesperson for the Beninese army, stressed the country’s commitment to strengthening national security. He cited increased defence funding, modernisation efforts, and the construction of a new defence and security city as evidence of progress.

Meanwhile, despite formal invitations, representatives from neighbouring Burkina Faso and Niger; both members of the Alliance of Sahel States, did not attend.

This year’s Independence Day parade was celebrated under the theme “Defence and security forces at the forefront of citizen enthusiasm for a safe and prosperous Benin”.
