Burkina Faso Assumes Presidency of WAEMU Council of Ministers

Burkina Faso has officially assumed the presidency of the Council of Ministers of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU), with Minister of Economy and Finance Aboubakar Nacanabo taking over from Ivory Coast’s Adama Coulibaly. The handover was confirmed at the close of the Council’s third ordinary session held under Coulibaly’s chairmanship.

The meeting saw the adoption of key measures, including the multilateral surveillance report for the first half of 2025 and economic policy guidelines for 2026, aimed at improving the reliability of data and guiding public policy across member states.

The Council also approved the 2024 financial statements of the AMF-UEMOA, validated by the Union’s Court of Auditors, and introduced a harmonized survey model to assess household living conditions across the region.

In his remarks, Nacanabo pledged to continue the work of his predecessor through “continuity and consolidation of achievements,” reaffirming Burkina Faso’s commitment to regional cooperation and sustainable development.

The session concluded in a spirit of consultation and solidarity, highlighting member states’ shared resolve to deepen regional integration and uphold macroeconomic stability within the Union.
