Burkina Faso Court Issues Life Sentences in 2018 Terror Attack Case

A Burkinabè court has sentenced three individuals to life in prison following a trial linked to the 2018 attacks on General Staff of the Armed Forces and the French Embassy in Ouagadougou.

The trial, which wrapped up on February 25, 2025, involved eight defendants, with some receiving 10 to 15-year sentences for related offenses, while two were acquitted.

The case focused on incidents that resulted in loss of life and injuries, with court proceedings revealing different levels of involvement. While some denied their role, others took responsibility and expressed remorse.

Authorities also imposed financial penalties on those convicted, reinforcing the country’s commitment to justice and security. The French Embassy chose not to participate in the case as a civil party.
