Burkina Faso Government Suspends All Beauty Pageants Pending New Regulations

The Burkina Faso government has suspended the organisation of all beauty pageants across the country as authorities work on a new regulatory framework for the sector.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Communication, Culture, Arts and Tourism on June 8, the government said the decision is intended to ensure that future beauty contests are organised under clearer and more harmonised rules nationwide.

According to the ministry, the suspension forms part of efforts to preserve and promote Burkina Faso’s cultural heritage while ensuring that beauty pageants reflect the country’s cultural identity, moral values, ethical standards and respect for human dignity.

Until the new regulations are adopted, no authorisations will be granted for national, regional or local beauty competitions. The government said the measure takes immediate effect and will remain in place until the new framework governing the organisation of pageants is finalized.
