Burkina Faso’s Foreign Minister Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré met UN Secretary-General António Guterres on September 28 to discuss security and climate challenges, as well as UN cooperation with Burkina Faso.
Guterres said UN programmes in the country are aligned with national priorities and highlighted the need for stronger African representation in global decision-making, including at the UN Security Council. He also stressed the challenges posed by Africa’s debt burden and limited climate-adaptation financing.
Traoré welcomed the UN’s engagement in Burkina Faso but criticised what he described as distorted narratives about the Sahel, saying AES countries had developed a clearer understanding of the challenges facing the region.
Traoré also met UNFPA Executive Director Diene Keita on September 29, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to strengthening cooperation on population and development issues.
