Burkina Faso’s President Captain Ibrahim Traoré has called on Burkinabe citizens to embrace the ideals of the Popular Progressive Revolution (RPP) as the country marked the 66th anniversary of its independence. In a national address, Traoré said the aspirations that accompanied independence on August 5, 1960, had been undermined by what he described as persistent attempts at domination and exploitation of the country’s resources. He maintained that Burkina Faso remains engaged in a struggle to reclaim its territory from armed groups while pursuing full political, economic and security sovereignty.
The Burkinabe leader paid tribute to national heroes who fought against colonialism and neocolonialism, as well as to the defence and security forces battling insurgent groups across the country. He urged all Burkinabe citizens to contribute to building a nation that is “free, independent and sovereign,” stressing that the principles of the Popular Progressive Revolution should serve as the foundation for a stronger, more prosperous Burkina Faso driven by its own resources and national unity.
