Burkina Faso has announced the suspension of the General Union of Students of Burkina for an initial period of three months, accusing the student body of promoting ideas linked to terrorism.
The decision was formalized through ministerial decree No. 2026-0108/MATM/SG/DGAT/DSOAP signed by Emile Zerbo. Authorities indicated that the suspension could be renewed depending on future developments.
The government based its action on the provisions of the 2025 law governing freedom of association in Burkina Faso, which outlines the legal framework for the suspension or dissolution of organizations.
Recognized officially since 2018, UGEB is considered one of the country’s most influential student unions.
The decree assigns responsibility for enforcing the measure to the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Mobility, while regional governors and the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation were also formally notified of the decision.
